CT man serious injured, three other people hospitalized after head-on crash on Route 4 in Harwinton

One man was seriously injured and three other people were hospitalized after a head-on collision on Route 4 in Harwinton on Sunday afternoon, state police said.

A Hyundai Tucson was traveling west on Route 4 in Harwinton around 4:50 p.m. on Sunday when the driver attempted to pass a Lexus RX 330 and collided head-on with a Jeep Gladiator that was traveling east, according to the Connecticut State Police.

The collision caused the Hyundai to veer off the roadway and hit a tree, state police said.

The Hyundai driver, a 22-year-old Farmington man, was transported to Hartford Hospital via LifeStar with life-threatening injuries, according to state police.

The Jeep driver, a 58-year-old Canton man, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with suspected minor injuries, state police said, and the front-seat passenger, a 61-year-old Canton woman, was transported to Waterbury Hospital with suspected minor injuries.

The Lexus driver, an 18-year-old man from Harwinton, was transported to St. Francis Hospital for suspected minor injuries, according to state police.

During the investigation into the crash, the roadway was closed for an extended period, and the Connecticut Department of Transportation was advised of damaged steel guardrails, state police said.

The incident remains under investigation, according to state police.
