Turmeric has a permanent position in our kitchens, be it for its aromatic addition to our daily meals or its health benefits. From its potent anti-inflammatory properties to its antioxidant-rich composition, turmeric has been a staple in many households, especially across India.

Talking to the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar said, “One of the lesser-known but incredibly significant benefits of turmeric is its positive impact on kidney health, particularly when consumed as turmeric tea on an empty stomach.”

How Kidney Aid Kidney Health

The active compound in turmeric responsible for its vibrant colour and powerful health effects is curcumin, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Curcumin is a bioactive substance with remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties “play a crucial role in combating oxidative stress and inflammation,” said Dr Chaudhary, “which are key factors contributing to kidney damage and dysfunction.”

Protecting Kidneys Through Antioxidant Defense

According to an overview published in the journal Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body, leading to cellular damage. “The kidneys, as vital organs responsible for filtering blood and eliminating waste, are particularly vulnerable to oxidative damage, said Dr Chaudhary, adding that “turmeric's antioxidant properties help neutralise free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and protecting kidney cells from harm.”

Anti-inflammatory Effects on Kidney Function

Chronic inflammation is a common precursor to various kidney diseases, including nephritis and nephropathy. “Curcumin's potent anti-inflammatory effects help mitigate inflammation in the kidneys, thereby preserving their function and reducing the risk of inflammatory kidney disorders,” he explained.

Detoxification Support

Another crucial aspect of kidney health is proper detoxification. Dr Chaudhary elucidated that the kidneys play a pivotal role in filtering toxins and waste products from the bloodstream. He said, “Turmeric promotes detoxification by supporting liver function, which indirectly benefits kidney health. By enhancing the liver's ability to process toxins, turmeric reduces the burden on the kidneys and promotes overall detoxification pathways.”

Balancing Blood Sugar Levels

High blood sugar levels can contribute to kidney damage over time, especially in individuals with diabetes. “Turmeric has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels, which can indirectly benefit kidney health by reducing the risk of diabetic nephropathy and related complications,” Dr Chaudhary opinionated.

Consuming Turmeric Tea on an Empty Stomach

“The time at which you drink turmeric tea also matters for it to effectively boost kidney health. Consuming it on an empty stomach allows for better absorption of curcumin into the bloodstream. When the stomach is empty, there is less interference from food, gastric juices, and other compounds, enabling curcumin to be more efficiently absorbed and utilized by the body,” said Dr Chaudhary. Here's a simple recipe to make turmeric tea:

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric or grated fresh turmeric
  • 1-2 cups of water
  • Optional: honey or lemon for flavour

Instructions

  • Boil the water in a saucepan.
  • Add the turmeric to the boiling water.
  • Reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Strain the tea into a cup.
  • Add honey or lemon if desired for flavour.

Turmeric tea, especially when consumed on an empty stomach, can be a valuable addition to a kidney-friendly diet and lifestyle. However, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have existing kidney issues or are taking medications, to ensure turmeric is suitable for you. Adding turmeric tea to your daily routine, along with a balanced diet and regular exercise, can be a proactive step toward nurturing your kidneys and promoting long-term wellness.
