A man suspected of firing off gunshots in his Laguna Niguel residence was arrested after a brief standoff with law enforcement on Saturday evening, March 9, authorities said.

Around 9 p.m., authorities were called to the 31000 block of Golden Lantern, near Chapparosa Park Road, for a wellness check involving a man who had fired a rifle inside the home during a family disturbance, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Gonzalez.

Family members were able to evacuate the home, Gonzalez said, though information on how many people were inside was not immediately available.

The neighborhood was briefly placed on lockdown as the man, by then alone inside the home, began firing his weapon again when deputies arrived.

A few gunshots nearly struck deputies outside the house and a sheriff’s helicopter while officials attempted to negotiate with the man, though it was not clear if the man was intentionally firing at law enforcement, Gonzalez said. Deputies did not return fire on the suspect.

A SWAT team was called to the scene. The man surrendered peacefully after about a half hour and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

No injuries were reported.
