FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — On Sunday, police announced they are upgrading charges against a Fall River man to murder after a stabbing at a rooming house on Friday night.

Police were called to the 200 block of Tripp Street just before 10 p.m. for a report of a fight that resulted in a stabbing. They arrived to find the victim, 44-year-old Joseph Bump, had been stabbed multiple times.

Bump was taken to Saint Anne’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police say the suspect, 42-year-old Pedro Fernando Orellano Alvarado, was arrested at the scene.

He was initially charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Police said he’ll remain in custody through the weekend and appear in court on Monday.

The incident remains under investigation.
