BANGOR — The Sohns Gallery (located inside The Rock & Art Shop) in downtown Bangor at 36 Central Street is pleased to announce the opening of a show that features the work of Surry, Maine artist Caroline Sulzer. Entitled “for a short while”, this show will run from through April 14. An artist talk and reception will be held on April 5 from 5-6 p.m.
Starting out as a poet and fiction writer, Sulzer states that she “came to painting by way of writing, motherhood and grace.” Her paintings border on the realm of abstract, yet cleverly depict forms and shapes that are recognizable. Nature is an integral part of her painting process, as she derives inspiration from walking through the woods and along the Surry shore every day. Rendered in acrylic with a muted palette, these pieces include translucent embracing figures, birds and other natural elements that create an atmosphere of calmness, warmth and serenity. Of her painting process Sulzer states, “As color interacts with and becomes form – observed, simplified, transformed – magic can happen and, maybe, a bit of beauty and truth result.”
Sulzer has been awarded several artist residencies in Vermont and New York. She has exhibited her work throughout Maine, including at the Danforth Gallery at UMA, The Parsonage in Searsport, Zoot Coffee in Camden, with Lights Out in Norway, and currently at Sidle House Gallery in Freeport. A collection of poetry is forthcoming in May from Deerbrook Editions.
