Weed As Art - 710 Labs Launches Preroll Pack And Capsule Line With Artist Spacebrat

Following

California cult-favorite brand 710 Labs has collaborated with aerosol artist Spacebrat on a new preroll joint pack, alongside a limited-edition capsule clothing collection. The drop contains the first-ever mini ‘noodle doinks,’ which are hand-rolled joints using 710 Labs flower with a fusilli noodle as the crutch. These 5 mini-joints sit inside collectible weed art from the colorful and avant-garde aerosol queen Spacebrat.

The Spacebrat x 710 Labs collab drops on August 24, 2022, while the joint pack will be on shelves in storefronts beginning on August 20, 2022. “We always stay true to our ethos; first and foremost, that is making products we are excited to smoke ourselves,” says Ian Skelly, 710 Labs’ Chief Innovation Officer.

“It’s really about maintaining the integrity of a home-rolled joint. We recognize that not everyone who enjoys cannabis can roll a perfect joint,” says Skelly. “And also understand that a lot of the preroll market right now is saturated with machine-rolled, shake-laden, and often distillate-infused, products.”

The noodle joints from 710 Labs have created quite a buzz for their minimalist innovation. Who would have thought you could get the ideal airflow through a noodle carb? A recent joint rolling piece about 710 Labs’ team member Thomas ran on Insider where he spoke about hand rolling about 300 joints a day.

Prerolled joints have grown massively in popularity with consumers, as sales have jumped 38.9% since 2020. Prerolls were the fastest growing product type in the last two years, MJBizDaily data found, with a lot of consumers reaching for what is convenient and familiar.

Skelly says that yes, prerolls are gaining popularity, but that at the same time, the consumer may not be getting the best quality product across the board. In the past, prerolls were seen as potentially sub-par weed being “hidden” behind the paper. This means some companies may have used weed that wasn’t their best, or even less-potent trim. “They are often marketed as a cheap add-on at check-out,” says Skelly.

“We decided to put our spin on them and make the highest quality version possible,” says Skelly. “We think our doinks are a way to bring a high-quality, hand-rolled cannabis experience without machines to anyone who may not have the time or skill to roll them on their own.” Skelly explains that 710 Labs uses only “top colas, no shake, trim or bad buds ever.”

As far as cannabis brands go, 710 Labs often blends genres. The company works frequently with artists, uplifting their work and using it for capsule collections or for cannabis releases. In the past, 710 Labs has offered up drops with artists Astral Oracles, Richard Prince, LSD World Peace, Camp High, and The Elder Statesman. The brand even created a colorful cannabis drop with the beloved Steve Urkel actor Jaleel White. These often sell out within minutes. Spacebrat is the next iteration.

Creatives and innovators inspire what we do, and we see art and cannabis as inextricably linked,” says Skelly. “The art community in particular is one we are sincerely passionate about. Spacebrat has been a friend whose art we personally collect, so collaborating was very organic.” He says the brand spent a year developing this project. “It was a pleasant surprise seeing Spacebrat approached by Virgil for Off-White and Ye for Donda while incubating this project,” says Skelly. “We can’t wait to see where Jasmine (Spacebrat) takes her practice!”

I spoke with the artist Jasmine Monsegue aka Spacebrat, on what it means to have her art on a cannabis drop. “Collaborating with 710 is an honor because of the quality of their products,” says Monsegue. “The way they handle their cannabis and even the design and printing for the product is always top-notch. In my eyes, I think we are a perfect match.”

Monsegue is praised in the fashion world for her haute-airbrush couture clothing, airbrushing subject matter from Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes on a T-shirt (a piece that was even displayed at London’s Harlesden High Street gallery) to scary horror-centric artwork inspired by circus scenes or the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. She thrives in depicting dystopian art-scapes.

The collaboration was born from friendship. “I was introduced to 710 by Ian Skelly, who is someone I appreciate and have worked with in the past,” says Monsegue. The strain inside the Spacebrat joint packs is Randy Watzon, an in-house genetic that can only be found exclusively from 710 Labs.

This was a fun project to work on personally because I really appreciate some good flower,” says Monsegue. “So even to have my art on the package design is a beautiful way for a different set of eyes to experience it off the canvas. I never imagined or expected that to happen, but I also wouldn't collaborate this way with just any cannabis company.”

“Blending fashion and art into any world is a smart move for a brand,” says Monsegue. “More people can relate to the design/product and get excited about sharing it. In the cannabis industry having art involved makes sense as far as the culture goes. Consider who is smoking the product and how the design can make it more interesting to have around.”

710 Labs views making hash as an art form in itself. “When individuals are working thoughtfully and creatively, with intention, it can take a practice to new levels. We know hash makers whose imagination and technical talent could be considered an art form,” says Skelly. “Hash-making also has a deep cultural history of innovation over centuries.”

The company recently expanded into the Florida marketplace through an exclusive partnership with The Flowery. “The market is exciting and in need of quality concentrate and flower. Florida is a medical state and regulations require vertical integration – meaning that everything a dispensary sells, they must also cultivate, extract, and package locally. The Flowery understood our vision and allowed us to fully oversee the 710 Labs operation there. They just opened their first retail shop in Miami and also offer delivery via The List, same as here in CA.”

“As of now, we are releasing our vape pods, extracts, and flower, but soon we will be adding joints, hash rosin Gummis and RSO making our product lines almost identical to our other states,” says Skelly. He says that the biggest limitations the company has faced are regulations on packaging. “They require a sanitized, basic box so we have to sacrifice the art, which we love,” he says.

What other states does 710 Labs have its eyes on entering? “We are currently setting up a facility in Michigan with plans to have plants in the ground Q4 of this year,” says Skelly. “After that, New York/New Jersey is definitely a market we’d like to enter, when licenses become available. Arizona and Illinois are prospects as well.”
