Tulsi Leaves For Managing Cholesterol: Expert Explains It Benefits And How To Use It

Did you know high cholesterol can lead to health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, and cognitive impairment? Hence, it becomes important to manage the elevated levels of LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol to promote overall health. One way to naturally manage high cholesterol levels is by using tulsi leaves. We spoke to our expert Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, who explained the benefits of tulsi leaves for lowering LDL cholesterol and how to use them.

Benefits of Tulsi Leaves To Lower Cholesterol Levels

According to a 2018 study, tulsi was found to lower fasting glucose levels in adults diagnosed with metabolic conditions. Additionally, in older patients with metabolic issues, it has been observed to reduce total, LDL, and VLDL (Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol levels.

Rich in Antioxidants

“Tulsi leaves are abundant in antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids. These compounds help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, which are key factors contributing to high cholesterol levels”, said Dr Chaudhary. Tulsi leaves prevent LDL cholesterol from oxidising by eliminating free radicals, which reduces the adverse effects of LDL cholesterol on cardiovascular health.

Improves Lipid Profile

“Tulsi leaves have been shown to improve the lipid profile by increasing High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, commonly known as 'good cholesterol'. HDL cholesterol helps remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, reducing the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries”, added Dr Chaudhary.

Regulates Blood Sugar Levels

Did you know high blood sugar levels can exacerbate cholesterol imbalances and increase the risk of heart disease? “Tulsi leaves possess hypoglycemic properties, meaning they help lower blood sugar levels. By regulating glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, tulsi leaves indirectly support cholesterol control and reduce the risk of developing metabolic disorders”, highlighted Dr Chaudhary.

Promotes Weight Management

Excess weight and obesity are significant risk factors for high cholesterol. Tulsi leaves can also aid in weight management by boosting metabolism and promoting fat breakdown. Additionally, tulsi leaves have appetite-suppressing effects, helping individuals make healthier food choices and maintain a healthy weight, which is essential for managing cholesterol levels.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Dr Chaudhary added, “Chronic stress and anxiety can contribute to elevated cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Tulsi leaves are renowned for their adaptogenic properties, meaning they help the body adapt to stress and restore balance.” By reducing cortisol levels and promoting relaxation, tulsi leaves support cardiovascular health and help lower LDL cholesterol.
