Palm Springs police ask for community help in ID’ing pool equipment thief caught on camera

The Palm Springs Police Department shared video of a thief stealing pool equipment at a home in an effort to help identify the suspect.

The short video shows a man approaching a door at 12:30 a.m. on February 22. The man immediately goes to cover the camera, but the few seconds he is visible, he can be seen wearing a hat and glasses.

Police said they have received numerous reports recently of pool equipment theft.

Detective Alex Doherty, leading the investigation, emphasizes the crucial role community members play in aiding law enforcement efforts.

"We urge anyone who recognizes the individual depicted in the provided imagery to come forward and contact us immediately," stated Detective Doherty. "Your cooperation could be instrumental in bringing this perpetrator to justice and preventing further incidents."

Anyone with information pertinent to the ongoing investigation are urged to reach out to Detective Doherty at (760) 323-8142.

"Any information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, could prove invaluable in solving these crimes," reads a PSPD news release.

PSPD is taking this opportunity to offer the following tips to residents, for safeguarding their pool equipment:

  • Installation of Security Cameras: "One is better than none." Investing in security cameras can serve as a deterrent to potential thieves and aid in capturing evidence in the event of a crime.
  • Utilization of Tracking Tags: Employing tracking tags on pool equipment can assist in locating stolen items and potentially leading law enforcement to the perpetrators.
  • Record Serial Numbers: Keeping a detailed record of serial numbers for all pool equipment can aid in recovery efforts and enhance the chances of prosecuting thieves.
  • Installation of Security Cages: Consider the installation of security cages specifically designed to protect pool equipment from theft or tampering.

"PSPD remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Palm Springs community. Through collaborative efforts with residents, we can work together to combat crime and preserve the tranquility of our neighborhoods," PSPD writes.
