(KRON) — A San Bruno mother is facing child abuse charges after her 4-month-old son suffered brain injuries from shaken baby syndrome, prosecutors said.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office charged 29-year-old Brianna Marie Cosey with felony assault on a child becoming comatose/paralysis.

The suspected child abuse happened on the night of February 27, investigators said. At 11 p.m., the infant and his father arrived at a hospital. The baby was “unresponsive” and his body temperature had dropped to 91.2 degrees, the DA’s Office said.

Hospital staff members gave the infant emergency medical care and alerted police. “Baby was transferred to Stanford Hospital and examination of victim revealed internal injuries … including two brain bleeds, brain swelling, and retinal hemorrhages,” prosecutors wrote. “Doctors also found injuries that were older in nature.”

Investigators said the infant’s injuries showed evidence that he suffered from shaken baby syndrome. When police interviewed the mother, Cosey allegedly admitted that she shook her baby while he was crying.

“She shook him so hard his head snapped back,” prosecutors wrote.

Cosey allegedly told police that she gave her baby an ice bath in an attempt to “wake” him up while he was unconscious, the DA’s Office stated. The baby’s body temperature plummeted and his father rushed him to a hospital.

Cosey is scheduled to appear in court on March 26 to enter a plea. Inmate records show she is currently jailed at Maple Street Correctional Center with no bail.
