The City of Pico Rivera received $850,000 in federal funds on Monday, March 25, from Rep. Linda Sánchez, D-Whittier, to support the completion of the Historic Whittier Boulevard Neighborhood Paseos – areas where residents and visitors can walk and dine.

This funding is part of a larger package secured by Sánchez totaling $12.7 million in federal funds for 15 community projects in the 38th Congressional District.

In Pico Rivera, the funding will be used to revitalize and enhance the Historic Whittier Boulevard area by transforming “blighted” back alleys and public parking lots into welcoming, family friendly neighborhood paseos, according to a press release. These paseos will serve as outdoor dining areas, contributing to the revitalization and economic growth of the community.

On Monday, Sánchez emphasized the importance of investing in projects that directly benefit her district’s constituents.

“I am proud to secure funding for the Historic Whittier Boulevard Neighborhood Paseos in Pico Rivera,” she said. “These paseos will not only enhance the beauty and vibrancy of our community but also provide valuable outdoor dining spaces for families to enjoy.”

The funding is part of several projects touted earlier this month, when Congress pushed through a series of spending bills to barely beat a deadline for a government shutdown.

On March 9, President Joe Biden signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024, a package of six domestic funding bills focused on lowering costs of families and creating “good paying jobs.” Through the funding package, Sánchez secured funding for all 15 of the community projects she requested that will benefit constituents.

The Historic Whittier Boulevard Neighborhood Paseos project aligned with Sánchez trying to lower family costs and create good-paying jobs for constituents, as well as strengthen local economies and improve the quality of life for residents.

“Pico Rivera is immensely grateful for Congresswoman Linda Sánchez’s unwavering support and dedication to our community,” said Mayor Andrew Lara in a statement. “Her tireless efforts in securing funding for vital projects like the Historic Whittier Boulevard Neighborhood Paseos demonstrate her commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Congressman Sánchez for her longstanding partnership and advocacy on behalf of the City of Pico Rivera.”
