Teen shot at birthday party outside Fort Worth church’s rented building

A 17-year-old boy was shot Saturday night at a birthday party outside a south Fort Worth church facility after at least two people got into a fight, according to Fort Worth police.

Police were called to New Bethel Complete in Christ Church at the intersection of Georgian Road and South Freeway around 11 p.m. Saturday. There, they found the victim with a non-life-threatening injury to his leg, according to police.

No suspect has been arrested as of Tuesday.

KDFW-TV reported police have received tips from witnesses and expect to have the person who fired the gun in custody soon.

According to police records, the person who fired the gun will likely face a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The shooting happened at a facility rented from New Bethel. It was in a detached building across the street from the church’s sanctuary. While the church owns the building, the event was not related to any church activities.

The birthday party was for a 16-year-old, KDFW reported.

Police told KDFW that it was near the end of the party when at least one person went out to a vehicle, grabbed a gun and started shooting.

Police don’t believe the teen who was shot had anything to do with the fight leading up to the shooting.

The Rev. Michael Moore, the pastor of New Bethel, told KDFW in a statement that he was sad that the celebration ended with violence. A security detail was present at the party and attendees were screened with a wand to detect weapons. The gun was fired in the parking lot.
