SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A shipping container is helping to make learning fun while also providing more access to hands-on STEM education.

Called the Curiosity Cube, the 22 by 10-foot retrofitted shipping container has been turned into an interactive mobile science lab. This lab is traveling throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

The goal is to bring a unique learning experiences to students.

On Thursday morning, it made a stop at Wegeforth Elementary in Serra Mesa. Students used modular electronics, digital microscopes, and other scientific tools to learn about sustainability.

The Curiosity Cub is set to make several stops in San Diego. This is the sixth year the mobile science lab has gone on tour.

The cube is the brainchild of MilliporeSigma, a U.S. and Canadian life science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, with facilities in Carlsbad and Temecula.

The company aims to help close the gap in Title 1 schools, where students have fewer opportunities to experience hands-on science.

The Curiosity Cube will be open to the public on Saturday, March 2. It will be set up at Snapdragon Stadium from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering.
