Zayn Malik to Calvin Harris: All the celebs who’ve quit Hollywood to live on a farm

Finding out that Jeffree Star is farming yaks was not on my 2024 bingo card

It’s no surprise that a lot of celebrities are currently taking themselves out of the limelight: Margot Robbie has deleted most of her social media accounts, Kelly Clarkson is reportedly very rarely seen outside of work, and Zayn Malik has moved away from the hustle and bustle of New York to a quieter life in rural Pennsylvania.

Like Zayn, a lot of celebrities are choosing to take a step towards more privacy by moving to the countryside. Apparently fed up with the daily grind of living in a city, some of them have even chosen to swap this for a different kind of grind by living on farms and raising their own animals – Carrie Underwood even grows her own food. With a lot of celebrities taking this step, we’ve done a deep dive into who exactly has swapped Hollywood for farm life:

Calvin Harris

Calvin Harris sold both of his LA mansions in 2020 and moved to a 138-acre farm in Ibiza, according to The Sun. Terra Masia is Ibiza’s largest organic farm and seemingly does everything from producing eggs and vegetables to hosting events and weddings. The Sun reported that a source close to Harris said that he “employs an expert team including farmers and chefs,” but still “regularly gets his hands dirty, helping to plant seeds and everything else involved in running a farm.”

Chris Pratt

While Chris Pratt’s main home is a 16 million dollar mansion in LA, he also lives part time seemingly off the map on Stillwater Ranch, where he spends time with his wife, Katherine Schwarznegger, daughter, Eloise, and their many sheep.

Jeffree Star

Honestly, hearing that Jeffrey Star was moving out of his 20 million dollar Barbie-ready mansion and into a 500-acre ranch in Wyoming was not something any of us expected in 2020. Hearing that he was raising yaks? A whole new level of surprise. However, the beauty influencer seemed to be very prone to scandals, as it soon came out that he trademarked Star Yak Ranch with plans to sell natural yak fibers, clothing, edible pet treats made from yaks and other questionable business plans – leading to a lot of anger from his animal-loving fans. Either way, his ranch currently has 187k follows on Instagram, owns over 400 yaks and six camels, and sells yak meat and yak jerky on their website.

Salma Hayek

The list of animals on Salma Hayek’s Washington state ranch is extensive. In a 2013 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, she announced that she had horses, alpacas, dogs, fish, parrots, rabbits, turkeys, chickens, a dog, a cat and a hamster. We respect the dedication!

Carrie Underwood

Is it really a surprise that this iconic country singer lives on a farm? Underwood lives with her husband and two sons on a stunning 400-acre family farm in Franklin, Tennessee, after spending 3 million dollars on it in 2011, according to Hello! She apparently grows her own produce and calls her garden her “happy place”.

Jeremy Clarkson

The former Top Gear host has made his 1000-acre farm in the Cotswolds no secret with his hilarious Amazon Prime tv-series Clarkson’s Farm. He’s owned the farm since 2008, but only decided to farm it himself in 2019 when the man he hired to manage the farm retired. From a shut down steak restaurants in a shepherd’s hut to failed crops, he’s since called it an “expensive failure”, only earning only £144 in his first year. But, he doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon, with season three of ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ set to be released in May 2024.

This Mamma Mia star lives in her Catskills farm with her husband, two children and many animals, including chickens, donkeys and horses. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, she called living on a farm her “dream”, but has also acknowledged that “having animals is expensive and exhausting and it’s not for everyone.”

Kevin Bacon

Kevin Bacon and his wife Kyra Sedgwick own a farm in Connecticut where they have been for over 20 years. They even named their many animals, with Macon the goat, Kate the Alpaca, pigs named Johnny and June and other equally adorable four-legged friends. Even more adorable is a video of Kevin Bacon himself singing ‘My Sharona’ to his allegedly very moody Alpaca, also named Sharona.

The former One Direction member has moved away from the limelight to a farm on Pennsylvania where he’s raising his daughter, Khai, after splitting custody with ex Gigi Hadid. Speaking about the move on the Call Her Daddy podcast, he said that living in New York had been “overwhelming” with “going out of your door to… craziness all the time.” He seems to like the number three, with three cats (Salem, Dobby and Vito), three dogs (Zion, Zeus and Fumper) , three turtles and six chickens. His goal is to be as “hands-on” with daughter, Khai, “every chance I [he] can be” from his new home while he co-parents with Gigi.
