LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Lafayette City Marshal Reggie Thomas made a commitment, dedicating everything to make sure the community of Lafayette will remain protected. All of his hard work is finally paying off after being one of very few marshal’s offices in the entire country with a CALEA accreditation.

“This is one of the moments that I’ve been waiting for, so I’m very excited about it,” said Thomas.

Since taking office in 2021, Thomas knew his agency was bound for great things. One major focus was receiving the honor of being accredited by CALEA, The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. To get accredited, an agency has to meet specific standards of professionalism and operational effectiveness. The agency had to meet 184 standards to achieve accreditation which they did. Thomas says his agency is now the only marshal’s office in the state with the honor.

“We’re the only ones in Louisiana,” Thomas explained. “I believe there are maybe two in Georgia, and that’s throughout the entire nation.”

Thomas sets goals for his team every year and at the top of the list was always to finalize the accreditation. Now he can say it has finally happened and the agency could not be any more excited.

“We have smiles on our face because we know we worked hard to get this done. We knew the professionalism that we had, but now is documented.”

Thomas says the main focus now is maintaining security of the court, continuing community work, and keeping good partnerships with the other agencies in Lafayette.
