UN office in the Dominican Republic secured after protest for Haitian shelter centers

Santo Domingo.- A multitude of citizens took to the streets this Sunday, marching from the Heroes Center to the United Nations (UN) headquarters, in protest against the recent request from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The UNHCR had urged the country to accommodate Haitians as refugees due to the deepening social and political crisis in Haiti.

In response to the call, security measures at the international organization’s headquarters had to be heightened.

The participating groups view this as a blatant interference by the UN in the country’s internal affairs and a violation of its sovereignty, given that the Dominican Republic has its Constitution and immigration laws to uphold.

Ángelo Vásquez, leader of the Ancient Dominican Order, a key organizer of the demonstration, expressed discontent, stating that international organizations are attempting to impose the acceptance of Haitians on the country, while other nations fortify their borders. He emphasized, “No one elected the UN to govern us.”

President Luis Abinader, along with opposition political leaders, has firmly rejected UNHCR’s request.

The United Nations has no idea what Dominicans are willing to do to preserve our nation. There are already over 3 million Haitians on Dominican soil. If they keep pushing for island unification, they’ll find out.

The UN is not a friend of Dominicans (or any one else)!

80% of Dominicans are Haitian descent, Dominicans need to educate themselves about where they come from and also need to know Haiti is their sister nation, It is one people. we are all God’s children . The devil is a liar those who are following the devil will always want to see division .Dominicans are not racists like some of you want to project, you have a small portion of them that are not educated that want to project the nation as a racist nation. I will never say to another country to keep the Dominicans out if they are seeking for a better life or safety. Thank God Haitians are not anti Dominican we care for anybody in our midst.

Both Austria and Germany actually have more in common and speak basically the same language and yet they are both separate independent countries. DR and Haiti are more distinct to each other than Austria and Germany. DR and Haiti are not “sister nation.”

You couldn’t be any more incorrect there, buddy… Dominicans are NOT descended from Haitians, the Spanish colony existed on the island well before the French one. Also, we are not “sister nations”, we are simply NEIGHBORING countries–very different. On a social, cultural, and socioeconomic scale, DR and Haiti are nothing alike.

The Dominican Republic enjoys an anuual trade surplus wth Hiati of nearly $1 billion dollars. The Dom Rep has also been the recipient of huge amounts of money endorsed by the United Nations, the World Economic Bank and many countries who have also experienced troubles in the past . It is time for you to give back. The United Nations is not asking for anything less than helping out in times of need. We are not talking about governments here. We are talking about people whose lives have been terrorized by gangsters.
