University of Houston sweeps Texas A&M-Commerce in softball series

Mar. 5—COMMERCE — The University of Houston won 8-2 on Sunday to complete a three-game non-conference softball sweep over Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The victorious Cougars improved to 15-5 for the season while the Lions dropped to 5-16.

The Lions have one non-conference game left on Wednesday at defending NCAA champion Oklahoma before beginning Southland Conference this weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The game in Norman, Oklahoma is to start at 6 p.m.

Houston scored six runs in the second inning to pull away from the Lions on Sunday.

Kennedy Thomas, Jazmyn Rollin and Bree Cantu all slugged two hits to lead the Cougars. Rollin slugged a two-run homer in the first inning.

Tehya Pitts scored both of the Lions' runs in the first and fifth innings on singles by Darby Hickey.

Anissa Arredondo pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Lions. She allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three.

Paris Lehman picked up the mound win for Houston, allowing four hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Houston also won 10-1 on Friday and 22-4 on Saturday.

Lai Beautae and Ja'Naiyua Thomas both homered for Houston during Friday's game. Mandy Esman drove in three runs.

Pitts scored the Lions' only run in the third on a single by Isabella Arzola.

Esman and Thomas homered for the Cougars in the 22-4 win. Shelby Smith drove in six runs with four hits and Esman drove in four runs.

Diamond Sefe homered for the Lions and scored two runs.

Brooke Hilton managed two hits.
