Monroe County sheriff's deputies recover stolen car, arrest suspect

FRENCHTOWN TWP. — Monroe County sheriff's deputies recovered a stolen car and arrested a suspect early Tuesday morning.

The suspect was arrested after he abandoned the car and called for a ride, a news release from the sheriff's office said.

Deputy Austin Graham observed a black Chrysler 300 with an improper plate traveling southbound on North Monroe Street near Mall Road at approximately 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, the release said. The vehicle turned into a nearby business parking lot, and the male driver, who was the only occupant, exited the car and went into the nearby business. Upon checking the vehicle identification number on the vehicle, it was determined it had been reported stolen to the Detroit Police Department.

When deputies entered the business to find the suspect, witnesses reported seeing him flee out the back door, the report said. Deputies began to set up a perimeter to locate the suspect. A short time later, Deputy Jacob Laboe saw a suspicious vehicle leaving the area and made a traffic stop on it at Mall Road and North Telegraph Road. The suspect who had been previously observed driving the stolen car was found in the backseat of the stopped vehicle. It was learned that he had been picked up from the area after calling for a ride. He was positively identified as the suspect and was taken into custody without incident.
