I utilize an integrative approach, pulling from modalities such as CBT, DBT, Relational Therapy, and Attachment-Based Therapy.
Do you find that there are unhelpful patterns in your life that you keep repeating? Maybe it's multiple unhealthy relationships, or self-sabotaging behaviors. Do you struggle with an unrelenting inner critic that makes every perceived failure feel catastrophic? Perhaps you're in the midst of a big change or transition in your life and you're struggling to adjust. You're most likely looking for a therapist who is warm and compassionate, who understands your specific struggle, and is able to help you make sense of the swarm of thoughts circling in your head.

I’m an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapist who utilizes Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills with individuals and Emotion Focused Therapy with relational clients.
Hi! I’m Ashley Sears, a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern, at National University. I have a passion for supporting individuals with complex developmental trauma. Trauma can hold us hostage to our past and I hope to provide a pathway to freedom in healing. Additionally, I believe strongly in helping both intimate and family relationships as these connections are often an anchor in life. Relationships don’t come with an instruction manual and can easily get thrown into chaos due to everyday life events. Thankfully, seeking support is the first step towards a new beginning.

I integrate mindfulness-based practices, ACT, DBT, and CBT.
My speciality is working with those who want to improve their overall wellbeing. Do you feel stuck in stress, sadness, trauma, numbness, or isolation? Perhaps you struggle to maintain relationships, or find yourself in a cycle of unhealthy boundaries. You may question your own worth and struggle to communicate your thoughts and feelings with those in your life. Whatever your struggles, you are most likely hoping for more peace of mind, connection, confidence, and compassion. Just like our bodies heal from scrapes and bruises, we are also built and meant to heal emotionally and mentally. Counseling is a great way to gain life skills.

Let me guess? You have no options but telehealth but it feels difficult to connect with a person over the internet. Perhaps you have never done therapy before; your life is crazy, and you have no time. You've secretly always wanted to try putting yourself first, for a change, but you have no idea where to begin. I love helping my client's navigate the realities of mental health issues. You don't have to have all the answers; you just have to start somewhere.

I am trained in EMDR, CBT-P, CETA, CBT, DBT, MI and ACT.
Our life can leave residual effects, based on experiences, leaving us feeling wounded, unheard and alienated from others and ourselves. Therapy is a private space to explore these effects and develop skills to move toward connection and fulfilment in our life. I am motivated by being witness to transformation and recovery. I have had the privilege of being part of someone’s journey of exploring experiences which have created distress in their life. I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), with 15 years of experience in the mental health field. I graduated from Boise State University with a Masters of Social Work.

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
