Washington approves smelt dipping, but Oregon can’t

Washington will allow another smelt-dipping season Tuesday in the Cowlitz River.

And although smelt entered the Sandy River in Oregon on Friday, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said it can’t authorize any dipping next week because of court-ordered protection of salmon and steelhead smolts migrating downriver.
