H.S. Boys Basketball: Dallas' Mike Cumbo selected Times Leader Player of the Year

Player Of The Year
In Cumbo's three years as a starter, Dallas posted a 69-17 record and won its first district title in 38 years in 2022. A complete player who could shoot from the perimeter, drive to the hoop, battle inside for rebounds and handle the ball when needed. He led the entire WVC by shooting 81.4% from the foul line, was second in Division 1 in scoring with a 17.6 average and canned 38 3-pointers.
NOAH DEWEY
Hanover Area
Junior
The 6-foot-5 Dewey made tremendous strides this season. Scored a WVC-leading 455 points during the regular season after having just 79 points as a sophomore. Led Division 2 with a 20.7 scoring average and also shot 68.4% from the foul line. Was a strong inside presence on both end of the court.
LUKE GENNARO
Hazleton Area
Senior
The two-time Times Leader All-WVC selection didn't have to be the main scoring threat this season. Instead, he used his skills as a point guard to run the offense and set up his teammates to score. Still turned in some fine numbers with a 10.4 scoring average, 25 3-pointers and 61.7% from the foul line.
JAIDYN JOHNSON
Nanticoke Area
Senior
The three-time Times Leader All-WVC selection missed some time with a facial injury, but came back to finish second in Division 2 in scoring with a 20.3 average while shooting 59.5% from the foul line. Expanded his game away from the paint with 20 3-pointer, but remained a force inside.
EVAN LAYBOURN-BODDIE
Wilkes-Barre Area
Senior
Laybourn-Boddie, a West Scranton transfer, was named the Division 1 MVP by the coaches in his only season with the Wolfpack. He led the entire WVC in scoring with a 22.2 average and 3-pointers with 66. Also hit on 60.5% of his free throws and scored his 1,000th career point in the postseason.
JOE MARSHALL
Hazleton Area
Senior
A two-year starter, Marshall did a lot of the unsung work in the paint by battling for rebounds and providing tough defense. He also increased his scoring average for a second consecutive year to 11 points. Shot 58.6% from the foul line and has contributed since his sophomore year.
DAVID POPSON
Holy Redeemer
Junior
Popson transferred from Hanover Area and became one of the WVC's most improved players. He supplied rebounding and rim protection inside while also increasing his offensive output. Led Division 2 by hitting on 75.6% of his free throws and posted a 12.3 scoring average.
DANE SCHUTTER
Wyoming Area
Senior
Schutter contributed to the varsity since his freshman season. He was selected the Division 2 MVP by the coaches. The two-time Times Leader All-WVC selection scored his 1,000th career point midway through the season. Was third in the division with a 17.6 scoring average and shot 65% from the foul line.
GEORGE SABATINI
Holy Redeemer
Senior
A first-year starter, Sabatini provided strong play all over the court. He was most comfortable inside where he averaged 11.8 points and used his great leaping ability to battle for rebounds. He could also handle the ball on the perimeter when needed. Shot 70.6% from the foul line.
RYAN SONES
MMI Prep
Senior
Sones played a big part in the Preppers winning the District 2 Class A title and advancing to the state quarterfinals. The three-year starter finished fourth in Division 2 with a 17.4 scoring average. He connected on 67.6% of his free throws and had a team-high 34 3-pointers.
