AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person was arrested by Austin Police on Wednesday after a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened in downtown Austin early Tuesday morning.

Tyrone Thompson, 23, was booked into the Travis County jail on several charges, including Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), resisting arrest search or transport, obstruction or retaliation, unlawful carrying of a weapon and an accident involving death, according to online jail records.

KXAN reached out to Thompson’s attorney, whose office said they could not comment on the case.

The victim in the crash was identified as Cody Jordon Shelton, 26, according to police.

Around 1:09 a.m., officers responded to the crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians at the intersection of East Seventh Street and Red River Street.

Shelton was pronounced dead on the scene. The second pedestrian was taken to a local hospital with “potential life-threatening injuries,” according to APD. As of Wednesday, the second person remains in the hospital in critical condition.

Thompson did not remain on the scene and continued driving east on East Seventh Street, police said.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers with APD attempted to pull over the vehicle driven by Thompson for a faulty headlight, but the vehicle did not stop.

The vehicle, driven by Thompson, ran a red light and struck the two pedestrians in the crosswalk.

As the investigation continued Tuesday, investigators were able to identify Thompson as the suspect in the crash after he was involved in another crash in Travis County. Police said he was arrested on unrelated charges at the time.

The case remained under investigation Wednesday.
