TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Lake Wales Police Chief Chris Velasquez will keep his job as the city’s top cop.

At Tuesday’s city commission meeting, City Manager James Slaton announced he rescinded the suspension placed on Velazquez on March 12.

In a memo to Velasquez, Slanton reported there were “repeated public concerns” within the police department regarding suspected nepotism and lack of transparency. The city began looking into Velazquez’s hiring practices after the Poor & Minority Justice Association brought a complaint regarding a recent promotion.

The group believes the police chief passed over another qualified candidate to promote Dale Hampton to lieutenant. Slanton indicated his new position is up in the air.

The police department was also accused of altering Hampton’s application because he did not fulfill an education requirement on time. Another complaint alleged Velasquez showed favoritism by hiring a sergeant’s daughter.

The West Central Florida Police Benevolent Association, the region’s police union, responded to the memo on March 13. Union leaders opposed the possibility of Hampton losing his promotion and called on the city commission to clarify where he stands.

In his letter, Slanton said he would begin looking for a new police chief and Velasquez would receive three unpaid days off beginning Monday. His suspension was lifted on Tuesday.

Slanton told city commissioners he chose to end the suspension after having discussions with Velasquez. Several residents spoke in favor of the move, but hoped the city would follow through with addressing their concerns.

Velasquez joined the Lake Wales Police Department in 1992 and has worked as police chief since 2011.
