Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is the flagship institution in the public Southern Illinois system. SIU was founded in 1869 as a teacher’s college and the school’s roots still stand, with 10% of students majoring in education. The area surrounding SIU campus is bucolic, with two state parks and four recreational lakes within 10 miles of campus.
