FORT NELSON, B.C. — Toad River will soon be getting an improved safe water system, according to the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM).
The NRRM announced on Thursday, March 28th, that it is receiving funding from the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
A grant application was first made to the ICIP in 2022.
The funding will be used to install a community water supply in Toad River, which will provide well water treatment, storage and distribution to ensure accessible drinking water for the community.
The provincial and federal governments will contribute 73.33 per cent of eligible project costs.
In July 2019, the NRRM requested staff look into options for providing safe drinking water to the community and potential grant opportunities.
The municipality built a new well in 2021 based on a report the year prior outlining challenges faced at the community hall specific to potable water. Water testing showed significant potential to increase the supply of good-quality water.
