SOUTH DAKOTA (KELO) — Most of the state of South Dakota is under a winter storm warning until Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. (CDT) according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy mixed precipitation, ice accumulations and gusty winds are expected across South Dakota.

A foot to a foot and a half of snow is possible east of the James River in the northeast part of the state.

If the greater portion of the storm system remains north of the Sioux Falls, area, mixed precipitation could fall. This could result in two to five inches of snow and ice in the southeastern part of the state.

The central part of the state could get six to nine inches of snow along with one-tenth inch of ice.

The western section of the state will fare better than the eastern part with snow and sleet accumulation of one to three inches.

Everyone across the state will have their share of wind Sunday and Monday with gusts ranging from 25 to 50 mph.

Snow and strong winds will continue across the state on Monday. These conditions could make travel very difficult. blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

If enough snow falls, the city of Sioux Falls could issue a snow alert. Those are called after at least two inches of snow. Plows focus on emergency snow routes first, then move into each of Sioux Falls’ three zones to clear all city streets. 

All vehicles parked on emergency snow routes are subject to ticketing and towing once the snow alert is issued. To find out what zone you live in, you can view details on the city of Sioux Falls website.
