State champions and big players: Vote for Jackson area athlete of the week for March 4-16

Last week saw two Jackson area girls basketball teams win TSSAA state championships.

Along the way, a total of nine teams qualified for the state tournament. On top of that, spring sports began their seasons.

After an exciting week, it’s time to vote for athlete of the week!

Here are the nominees for this week.

Hayley Brewer, Adamsville: Brewer knocked around three hits, including a solo home run in Thursday’s extra-inning loss to Bruceton.

Joya Crawford, Dyersburg: Playing through illness, Crawford scored 10 points in the TSSAA Class 3A championship game, including the game-winning shot with less than a minute left to win. Crawford earned tournament MVP honors.

Kayleigh Strayhorn, Dyersburg: Strayhorn led the Trojans with 14 points in the TSSAA Class 3A state championship victory on Saturday and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Micah Hart, Gibson County: Hart averaged 19 points per game, including a 27-point performance in the TSSAA Class 2A state quarterfinals and a 20-point game in the state championship game. Hart earned tournament MVP honors.

Sania Reaves, Gibson County: Reaves averaged 10.6 rebounds in the TSSAA Class 2A state tournament, including 15 in the Pioneers’ quarterfinal win over Huntingdon.

Mikkel Cunningham, Milan: Cunningham had 16 saves in the Bulldogs’ win over Dyer County on Friday.

Luke Hardee, Milan: Hardee recorded a hat trick in the Bulldogs’ season-opening win Friday over Dyer County.

Hallie Allen, South Gibson: Allen hit a game-winning 3-pointer with .4 seconds left to lead the Hornets to a TSSAA Class 3A quarterfinal win over Chester County and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Jaycee Prather, Ripley: Prather hit a three-run home run on Thursday against St. Benedict. She totaled six RBIs.
