Our thoughts on Weed Man

Weed Man earned a rating of 4.3 out of 5 per our comprehensive review standards, placing it on our list of the best lawn care companies. It scored well in most of our review standards’ subcategories, such as Reputation and Additional Services, due to its landscaping services and certification with the National Association of Landscape Professionals. However, it lost points in our Communication and Service Availability categories because it lacks an online chat tool and only services 37 states.

What we like

Weed Man’s national page states that it offers up to 24 lawn and pest control services, ranging from mechanical core aeration to mosquito services. Weed Man also has the most robust pest control services of the lawn care companies we’ve reviewed — it treats eight different pests, including moles.

Due to its franchise business model, Weed Man locations are locally owned and operated, meaning its technicians are familiar with your area’s horticulture. They have expertise in treating your specific lawn type effectively and accounting for the climate and water conditions. In addition, our secret shopping showed that Weed Man offers location-specific deals, such as renewal discounts and add-on services.

What we don’t like

Its franchise model is a double-edged sword — Weed Man’s customer service varies widely among locations because each branch is individually owned and operated. During our secret shopping, we called Weed Man’s Fort Myers, Florida, location and reached its voicemail three times. But when we called Weed Man’s Charleston, South Carolina, branch, their representative answered within the first few rings.

Weed Man doesn’t disclose its lawn care pricing online. You must call your local branch and schedule an at-home inspection. This entails Weed Man’s technicians measuring your lawn and providing base pricing on its size and condition. If you know your lawn’s square footage, a Weed Man customer service representative can give you ballpark pricing. Other lawn care companies, such as TruGreen, provide pricing estimates online.

Weed Man lawn care plans and services

Based on our phone conversation with a representative from Weed Man’s Charleston branch, we learned that the company offers service plans for its single-service treatments. Based on your lawn care needs, Weed Man will develop a custom lawn care plan that’ll treat your lawn annually.

The representative mentioned that not all services are available in certain areas. In addition, treatment frequency and service procedures vary based on your lawn’s condition and location.

Below is an overview of Weed Man’s lawn care services.

Lawn care services

The services listed below are from Weed Man’s national home page. Your local Weed Man branch’s services may differ based on your location’s climate, topography and pests that live in the area.

According to our quote for a 1,432-square-foot, single-family home with an 8,374-square-foot lawn in Charleston, South Carolina, Weed Man offers an annual lawn fertilization treatment plan that includes fertilization and weed control services. Treatment starts the first Thursday after you first set up your plan and lasts until December 31 of that year.

This treatment plan also includes general pest treatments against seasonal pests in Charleston. Weed Man will provide nine total lawn treatment applications, and the first application includes a soil sample collection. Treatment frequency depends on the results of your soil sample and your lawn’s condition, but the general treatment schedule is every 45 days.

Quotes and pricing

We called Weed Man’s Charleston branch to obtain a pricing estimate for its lawn care treatment plans. According to the representative, Weed Man typically doesn’t disclose pricing over the phone because it needs to inspect and measure your lawn in person before giving a concrete price. However, the representative did provide a ballpark estimate when we gave him the address and lawn square footage of the Charleston home we used for our quote.

You have three payment options: pay as you go, auto pay and prepay. The representative added that Weed Man provides a 5% discount if you prepay for an annual plan.

The plan includes nine treatments. Weed Man will apply certain treatments twice during the same visit and add them to your service visit invoice. Your cost will vary based on your location, lawn size and service selections. The table below shows the estimated cost of Weed Man’s lawn treatment plan based on the Charleston address.

We also pulled the average cost of Weed Man’s single treatment and annual lawn care plans from our February 2024 lawn care survey. Customer thoughts

Weed Man has a poor customer rating of 1 out of 5 stars on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and a B- rating. However, the poor rating is only based on 12 total customer reviews. The complaints center on spotty lawn treatments, poor customer service and high prices. Upon further digging, we saw that Weed Man had responded to each negative review to attempt a resolution.

Many of these negative sentiments from Weed Man’s BBB profile are also present in its Google Reviews. That said, Weed Man scored a minimum of 3.7 out of 5 stars across multiple branches in the southeastern corner of the United States. For example, its North Charleston, South Carolina, branch scored 4.2 out of 5 stars.

A review from David Y. praised Weed Man’s effective lawn treatment, highlighting that the first lawn application he received from Weed Man yielded better results than a previous lawn care company he’d hired.

What should you expect from Weed Man’s lawn care service?

The Weed Man’s representative also gave us an overview of its service process when you sign up for a lawn care plan or single treatment. He noted that the service process varies depending on your lawn’s condition and size, as well as your location and service choices. Here is an overview of what to expect when hiring Weed Man.

Before service

First, Weed Man’s sales representatives will set up a free inspection of your property. If you own pets or have small children, ensure they are away from the lawn before the inspection and treatments start. The assigned Weed Man technician will measure your lawn’s square footage and collect a soil sample.

After measuring your lawn, the technician will speak with you, report their findings and develop a treatment plan to meet your lawn’s specific needs. The technician will then send your soil sample to a third-party laboratory for analysis and adjust treatments depending on the results. Additionally, the inspection technician will set up service appointments based on the custom plan they develop.

During service

For each service appointment, the Weed Man technician will arrive and provide an overview of which treatment they’ll perform. According to the Weed Man representative we spoke with, you don’t need to be home for any of the scheduled service treatments.

Next, the technician will begin the treatment application. Depending on your lawn’s condition, the technician will apply additional treatments, which Weed Man adds to the service invoice.

After service

Once the technician finishes applying treatment, they will leave instructions on how to care for your lawn before the next service. The technician will provide specific recommendations based on your lawn type.

Weed Man recommends keeping pets and small children off your treated lawn for at least one to four hours — when the treatment completely dries. This time frame varies based on weather conditions. Sunny, hot climates will dry the treatment much faster than a cool, overcast climate.

In addition, Weed Man recommends you water your lawn 24 hours after the treatment so that the lawn application can fully absorb. You must follow the care instructions the technician leaves you, which includes mowing, to qualify for its service guarantee.

Service guarantee

Weed Man provides a money-back guarantee for all unused services if you pay for your lawn plan in advance and cancel it. It also provides a service guarantee in between scheduled visits. This guarantee stipulates that Weed Man will reservice your lawn before your next scheduled service if you aren’t satisfied and if you contact them within two business days of receiving treatment.

However, you must provide proof that you’ve been following your Weed Man technician’s care instructions before they reservice your lawn. Weed Man will void your service guarantee if you don’t follow the care instructions.

Does Weed Man have a cancellation policy?

Weed Man accepts cancellations at any time. According to its terms and conditions, the company may charge a $25 administrative fee if you cancel for any reason other than selling or moving from your property, or in the case of death. Weed Man will provide a prorated refund based on the services you’ve already used before canceling. In addition, Weed Man requires you to contact its main office if you wish to cancel.

Final take: Weed Man is a solid choice if you need specialty lawn care services

Weed Man offers many lawn care and specialty pest control services that similar lawn care providers don’t, such as xeriscape weed control. In addition, Weed Man provides budget-friendly treatment plans and several convenient payment options. However, Weed Man doesn’t service all states and you’ll likely experience mixed customer service depending on the branch closest to you.

Before hiring Weed Man, we recommend requesting quotes from two other lawn care companies to compare service offerings, plan costs and guarantees to ensure you pick the right provider for you.

Our rating methodology for lawn care companies

We researched full-service and subscription lawn care companies to help you choose the right provider for your lawn and budget. We compared full-service companies based on their service options, reputation, customer service availability and extra perks. Companies that offer specialty treatments, flexible scheduling and convenience perks scored more points. We rated subscription companies based on their plan options, cost and customer service.

We rated both types of companies using our comprehensive methodology. We score providers out of 100 points. Then, we divide the final score by 20 to obtain the 5-star rating we feature in our reviews.

BBB and Google Reviews ratings are accurate as of March 2024.
