El Segundo Unified School District Superintendent Melissa Moore is retiring, she announced Wednesday.

Her last day leading the school district will be June 30.

“This decision, made with joy, anticipation, apprehension and acceptance, marks the end of a noteworthy chapter in my life,” Moore said in a press release. “It has been my distinct honor and privilege to lead this school district for a decade, alongside an extremely talented team of dedicated faculty, staff, teachers, administrators, cabinet, and board members.”

The board will immediately start searching for her replacement.

Moore first started in the role in 2014, but has had a more than 30-year career in education.

During her tenure at ESUSD, Moore oversaw the sale of Imperial Street School which established ongoing revenue for the district, helped develop a comprehensive graduate profile, adopted the RULER Program for social-emotional learning and saw the passage of Measure ES, a $92 million bond measure for district-wide facility upgrades. This year, for example, ESUSD plans to open three new school buildings with some of the funding.

“While the Board and I are happy for Dr. Moore to move into her next chapter in life, we know we will all feel her absence greatly,” ESUSD Board of Education President Meredith Beachly said in the release. “We are thankful for her decade of dedication to our students and our community, and we deeply appreciate how she has served ESUSD with thoughtful leadership and innovative vision, raising our District up to its highest level of being a great place to learn and work.”

Moore in 2018 was named Superintendent of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators (Region 14), recognizing her exemplary leadership.

“As I step into this new chapter of my life, I carry with me many fond memories, as El Segundo is indeed a truly special place,” Moore said. “I am confident that the commitment of teamwork, innovation and inclusion will continue to thrive and succeed under the capable hands of our amazing team of employees.”

Moore said she will work closely with the school board and district administration to ensure a smooth transition.
