According to a release, “CLIMAX kids, 1956 shares a vivid sense of the intensity of a child’s world—its passions, fears, anxieties, joy, and pleasures. The book also weaves in historical vignettes related to the heyday of molybdenum mining and to the unique community once perched at 11,300 feet.”

Oakley writes under the pen name D.E. Vincent. She is a retired English teacher with a Master of Arts in literature and history from Colorado College. She also authored the book, Oro City, which is about life in California Gulch, pre-dating the Leadville silver boom.

According to the book synopsis, “Oro City is the spectacular, albeit inhospitable, site of placer gold mining during the 1860’s. Meet fortune seeking immigrants – a blacksmith, store keeper, singer, school teacher, and sporting women, as well as a rascally burro – whose lives are filled with anxiety, fear, joy, and humor.”

Her books illustrate her love of hometown history. Oakley is an active senior who works at the Tabor Home Museum in the summertime and enjoys daily walks and frequent travel.

Two Dog Market seeks to support the local community by hosting local author readings and by offering a wide range of books, with a special collection of titles about Leadville and Colorado history. The shop also offers travel items, antiques, Colorado-made specialties, and other products. Two Dog Market is open Monday through Sunday from 10:00  a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
