An autopsy will take place at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Lab to determine the cause of death for a woman found unresponsive in her cell at the Athens-Clarke County Jail on Saturday, according to Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson.

Quamesha Denise Shack, 44, had a history of heart problems and it appears her death may be attributed to a coronary condition, Wilson said. However, he said the autopsy will make the final determination.

Shack was placed in the jail at about 1:50 a.m. Friday and she was found unresponsive in her jail cell at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, according to jail records at the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, which manages the jail.

After life-saving attempts at the jail, she was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

According to the jail log, Shack, who resided on Royal Court, was arrested on a warrant that charged her with failing to appear for court.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked by the sheriff’s office to investigate the death.
