Gav in Merseyside: Hi Phil, is it time for Jarrad Branthwaite to start a game for England? I think Dunk is a good player, but at 32 years old and only four caps surely there needs to be some better succession planning?

Phil McNulty: Certainly is, Gav. I think Branthwaite should start against Belgium. I like Lewis Dunk and he is a very good player for Brighton but he gave a rather uncertain performance as a substitute against Brazil and was involved in their winning goal.

What is there to lose by starting Branthwaite tomorrow? He has had an outstanding season in a struggling team at Everton so let’s see how he shapes up.

I know the Scottish Premiership is not the best league in the world, however, is Gareth Southgate particularly snubbing it with the latest choices in the goalkeeping department? Rangers' Jack Butland is being omitted once again for keepers who can't even get a game for their club, while he has performed superbly domestically and in Europe. Also, I believe that Southgate should have had a look at James Tavernier at least once in his time in charge given Tav's numbers, particularly in Europe, when he was the top scorer in the entire Europa League in Rangers' run to Seville that season.

  4. Stuart Webber comments about black players 'do not reflect club's views'published at 16:43 25 March

Norwich City say comments by former sporting director Stuart Webber about five black players "do not in any way reflect the wider views" of the club.

Webber said in a newspaper interview that Raheem Sterling, Abu Kamara, Jonathan Rowe, Max Aarons and Jamal Lewis might have ended up "in jail" had they not become footballers.

    His comment was widely condemned.

"Norwich City is a home for everyone," the Championship club said in a statement published on their website., external

Anon: Hi Phil. How close do you think Harvey Elliott is to a full England call-up?

Phil McNulty: Harvey Elliott has matured so much this season and is a stand-out in the England under-21 side. I think the Euros will come too soon for him but I am sure he will get his first full cap very soon post-Euro 2024. A very good young player.

Martin: Would Harry Maguire get in Liverpool's team full strength or depleted? If no, why is Gareth Southgate not trusting Joe Gomez (and a host of others) ahead of someone who is clearly a liability an international level?

Phil McNulty: Well it would depend on how depleted they were I suppose, Martin, but I think they would have to be very, very, very depleted. I do not think Maguire would get anywhere near a full strength Liverpool team to be frank. Nowhere near.

Southgate is firm in his conviction that Maguire is part of England’s best central defensive partnership alongside John Stones and cites the record at major tournaments to back his argument.

I am sure he will try people out against Belgium but – despite my serious doubts – I suspect he will start alongside Stones in Germany.
