MAPLEWOOD, Mo. – One man was charged Friday for stealing an Israeli flag off a front porch not once but twice.

Maplewood Police Department said 39-year-old Matthew Pisoni is responsible for stealing an Israel flag off the porch of a Maplewood home.

The homeowner, Corinne, is too afraid to use her last name or show her face because two others who also stole a flag and vandalized her Israel hostage banner are yet to be caught.

“It’s terrifying,” Corinne said.

Corinne told FOX 2 she has not felt comfortable taking her son outside since the thefts, which have happened a number of times within the last few weeks.

Pisoni is facing three misdemeanor charges, including stealing and harassment. St. Louis Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell said the charges were appropriate.

“People will see we are not going to allow that type of behavior in St. Louis County,” Bell said Friday.

Corinne, however, wished the charges could’ve been harsher and even elevated to a felony hate crime.

“I absolutely think it’s a hate crime, because there are dozens of different flags in this neighborhood,” she said. “I haven’t heard of a single person having their flag stolen other than our house and our Israeli flag.”

Corinne also got a restraining order against Pisoni, who only lives a couple blocks away.

In a statement, Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League Jordan Kadosh wrote:

“No one should have to suffer this sort of bigotry, much less in their own home. At ADL, we take every incident of potential antisemitism, antizionism or any discrimination seriously. We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for their professionalism in keeping the family safe and bringing the alleged perpetrator to justice.”

There remain two others involved in the crimes who have not been caught yet.
