Man killed in assault near El Cajon shopping center

EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man was killed in an assault near an El Cajon shopping center early Tuesday morning, El Cajon police confirmed.

The assault was first reported around 3 a.m. in the area of Orange Avenue and Main Street. Upon arrival to the scene, El Cajon police officers found one victim, described as an unhoused man of an unknown age, suffering from blunt force injuries.

According to El Cajon police, first responders attempted life-saving measures, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Authorities plan to remain on scene for the next several hours to collect evidence, including looking for any security camera footage of the incident.

El Cajon police said one person was detained for questioning, but was later released. No information about a possible suspect is available at this time.
