Over the next few weeks, students across Alabama will take standardized tests in English language arts, math and science.
Students aren’t graded on their results, but it is especially important for third graders to do well on the reading portion of the ELA test. If students aren’t reading “on grade level,” they are at risk of being retained and repeating third grade. Learn more about the standardized test process and what students grades 2-8 are expected to know.
Parents, you can help your student prepare by reviewing sample test questions provided by the Alabama Department of Education. The ELA test includes questions that test a student’s vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and writing ability. Reading-specific questions are a portion of the test; to read “on grade level,” a student needs to answer about half of those questions correctly.
