Red Bluff Round-Up just weeks away

Mar. 28—The Red Bluff Round-Up is just weeks away and competitors, organizers and vendors are getting ready for the nation's largest three-day rodeo.

Leading up the April 19-21 event, the Red Bluff/Tehama County Chamber of Commerce hosts 11 days of activities and events including a mixer, parade, chili cook-off, golf tournament, Cowboy Coffee and more.

In addition, the Red Bluff Rotary Club hosts the rodeo's Tough Enough to Wear Pink luncheon fundraiser on April 16.

A Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association-sanctioned event, the rodeo will pay out more than $300,000 in prize money as it brings traditional rodeo competition to the Tehama County Fairgrounds' grandstands arena.

A tradition that extends back to the early 1900s, this will be the 103rd year for the competition of bull riding, saddle and bareback bronc riding, team roping, barrel racing, tie-down roping and steer wrestling.

And again this year, the Red Bluff Round-Up Association Board of Directors welcomes women's breakaway roping to the rodeo.

The rodeo takes place Friday, Saturday, Sunday, April 19-21, with over 650 contestants, including world champions to rookies, competing in slack throughout the week before the main event. Slack takes place at the fairgrounds arena and is free to attend.

Along with the traditional competition, the rodeo features mutton bustin', wild pony rides and wild horse races.

Unique to Red Bluff and a fan favorite is the Wild Ride, which takes place during the April 21 final performance when cowboys dressed up in costume ride a bucking horse, the best ride and costume winning a special prize.

Following Saturday's rodeo, fast-rising country singer songwriter Chase Matthew will perform live in the fairgrounds' Pauline Davis Pavilion. Gates open at 6 p.m.
