Two people were found dead after shots were heard being fired inside a home in Port Hueneme Saturday night, city police said.

Police Chief Michael Federico said Sunday that the case was being investigated as a potential homicide-suicide. The two adults were believed to be known to each other.

Officers said they entered the home located off the 700 block of East Port Hueneme Road around 7:20 p.m. after receiving the report of gunshots. They reported finding a man and a woman who were both dead.

Individuals who emerged from the residence told responding police that people were still inside, according to a news release issued by the Port Hueneme Police Department.

Officers said they were later able to enter the home with the aid of SWAT teams from the Oxnard Police Department and the Ventura County Sheriff Department.

The names of the two individuals had not been released as of Sunday morning.

The home is located just off Port Hueneme Road in the Portside community, across the street from Wene'mu Park. Officers were packing up and leaving the scene at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. They declined to make any comment.

A man who lives in a nearby residence said he didn't know the people involved and said he thinks multiple couples lived in the home. Asking not to be named, he said he heard someone arrive and slam a door late Saturday afternoon. About an hour later, he heard the "loud thud" of gunshots.

"About two minutes after, the cops were storming the area," he said.

The police were stationed on Port Hueneme Road and also in alleys, surrounding the residence in a response that included SWAT teams, trucks and drones, the man said. At about 10 p.m., people in some nearby homes were evacuated, the man said, adding his family spent the night in a hotel.
