AUSTIN (KXAN) — We are just over a week away from the total solar eclipse in Central Texas and many communities are gearing up for a busy day.

While the Hill Country is expected to be flooded with tens of thousands of visitors, many people will be enjoying the views from Austin, as well.

Some of those viewers will be Austin Independent School District students.

Several school districts canceled classes on April 8 due to safety logistics and traffic concerns. AISD opted to keep the district open to educate students about the event.

The district said it will base lesson plans around the eclipse, with activities like art projects, writing lessons and more.

AISD told KXAN they have glasses for all students and staff.

While staring at the eclipse can cause blindness and eye injuries, the district said it is educating students, especially younger elementary students about the dangers of looking at the sun.

Parents, volunteers and staff will assist students when they look at the eclipse with their glasses.
