A woman and two children died, and seven other people were injured, following a head-on collision on the 15 Freeway near Baker over Easter weekend, authorities said.

The collision took place about 1:40 p.m. Saturday on the northbound 15 Freeway in the Halloran Springs area, just northeast of Baker, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It involved a southbound 2019 Kia SUV containing six people and and a northbound 2016 Mercedes-Benz SUV containing four people, according to CHP officials and logs.

The driver of the Kia lost control in the heavy rain conditions and hydroplaned, according to a written CHP statement.

The Kia traveled across all the southbound lanes. The Kia continued across the center dirt median and entered the northbound lanes, directly into the path of the Mercedes-Benz traveling in the north lanes of Interstate 15, and struck the vehicle head-on, CHP officers said.

The speed of the Kia prior to the collision had not been determined, officials said.

Alicia Ramos, 43, and her son Isaac, 13, were killed in a head-on collision on the 15 Freeway near Baker on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

A woman and her 13-year-old son who were riding as passengers in the Kia died from injuries suffered in the collision, according to officials and loved ones. Both were described as Madera residents.

San Bernardino County coroner's officials identified the woman killed in the wreck as 43-year-old Alicia Ramos. Family members identified the boy as her son, Isaac.

A boy from Los Angeles who had been riding as a passenger in the Mercedes-Benz was also killed, according to the officer. He was estimated to be about 11 years old, but his exact age was not available and his identity had not yet been released pending positive identification and notification of family.

A 3-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy who had been riding in the Kia were hospitalized with major injuries, according to the CHP. The 52-year-old Madera man who had been driving the Kia, along with a 19-year-old man riding as a passenger, suffered injuries described as moderate.

Family members said the survivors were Alicia Ramos' husband and three children.

A 15-year-old girl riding in the Mercedes-Benz suffered major injuries, while the driver of the SUV, described as a 38-year-old Los Angeles man, was treated for minor injuries, officials said.

Loved ones of Alicia and Isaac Ramos have set up two memorial websites on GoFundMe.com to raise money to help the devastated surviving family members.

"Alicia and Isaac were known for their love, kindness, and vibrant spirits," according to a statement posted along with one of the fundraisers. "She was the most selfless mother who devoted herself wholeheartedly to the well-being of her children, and always putting their needs above her own. Her endless love and unwavering care were the pillars of strength that held her family together through every challenge they faced."

The three surviving Ramos children, as well as their father, face a difficult recovery ahead, both physically and emotionally, loved ones said.

"(They) are currently undergoing many surgeries to save their lives and will face a long road to physical and emotional recovery," the statement said.

The deadly collision forced the closure of the northbound 15 Freeway for more than two hours, according to the CHP. A single lane was reopened at 5:35 p.m. before all lane closures were lifted shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday.

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, was urged to contact the CHP's Barstow Office at (760) 255-5900.
