Tower Health’s hospitals in Pottstown and Phoenixville have new leadership.

Dr. Richard McLaughlin, MD, MBA, has been named president and CEO of the two medical facilities, assuming his new position on April 8.

“I am excited to be stepping into the role of president and CEO,” McLaughlin said in a statement Monday. “I look forward to working with these two hospital staffs to achieve our vision and strategy for each hospital.

“We have the people, passion, and commitment to become even stronger in this competitive market, and I am confident we will continue to lead the way in advancing healthcare for our patients while delivering an excellent patient experience.”

In his new role, McLaughlin is responsible for the strategic, operational, and financial performance of both Phoenixville Hospital and Pottstown Hospital. He is also responsible for developing a strategy for the hospitals and will oversee all critical strategic, operational, and business-building areas, according to a press release.

“Dr. McLaughlin has a proven reputation as a strong healthcare leader who will lead an exciting course for Phoenixville and Pottstown Hospitals,” Michael Stern, Tower Health’s chief operating officer, said in a statement. “We are certain he will guide these two hospitals to further success in our mission to provide compassionate patient care through unrivaled quality and outreach in the many communities we serve.”

McLaughlin has been with Pottstown Hospital since 1999 — where he started as an attending emergency medicine physician. In 2005, he took on the role of chairman and medical director of emergency medicine. In 2015, he became the chief medical officer at Pottstown Hospital and was promoted to chief medical officer of both Pottstown and Phoenixville Hospitals in 2022. Additionally, from 2007 to 2019, McLaughlin was president and CEO of Tri-County Emergency Physicians.

McLaughlin is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, where he received his Doctor of Medicine, and he completed his Residency in Emergency Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He also holds an MBA from the University of Massachusetts.

McLaughlin succeeds Rich Newell, who led both Pottstown and Phoenixville hospitals — as Pottstown Hospital’s president and CEO since July 2015, adding the title of president and CEO of Phoenixville Hospital in September 2021. In March, Temple Health announced Newel as the president and CEO of Temple Health-Chestnut Hill Hospital, effective April 8. Temple Health assumed ownership of Chestnut Hill Hospital from Tower Health in January 2023.
