A 15-year-old boy was in stable condition Tuesday after being stabbed in the back on a middle school basketball court in Mount Vernon, N.Y.

The boy, who was not named, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx with “non-life-threatening injuries to his back,” the school district said in a short statement.

“A 15-year-old Mount Vernon High School student was stabbed at the basketball court at Benjamin Turner School shortly before 4 p.m. today,” the school said. “The school has been closed this week as students are on spring break. Police are actively investigating the incident.”

Police did not release any information, leaving it unclear what led up to the attack, according to News12. The Mount Vernon Police Department asked anyone with information to contact their detective division.

The small Westchester County city of about 70,000 people is just north of the Bronx, sandwiched between Yonkers and New Rochelle.
