Fourteen patrol vehicles will soon be retired from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and replaced with new 2025 Ford Explorer police vehicles.
During a business meeting earlier this month, the Board of Carroll County Commissioners unanimously approved $659,624 from the county budget for the purchase of the vehicles from Hertrich Fleet Services.
The new vehicles are slated for delivery to the county in six to nine months, according to Reid Oliver, bureau chief of the county’s fleet management and warehouse. When the new vehicles are delivered, the vehicles now being used will be sold at an auction.
The new vehicles, known in the industry as the Ford Explorer Police Interceptors, will come outfitted with police lights, sirens, communication equipment and compartments for storage, a county briefing paper states.
The last time commissioners approved a vehicle purchase for the sheriff’s office was in September 2022, when they unanimously approved the purchase of 13 new patrol vehicles, at a total cost of $580,453. This included two 2023 Ford F-150 Police Responder pickup trucks ( $47,993), as well as six hybrid 2023 Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles ($271,212) and five non-hybrid 2023 Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles ($213,255).
Commissioners approved Thursday’s purchase without comment. The funding for the vehicles is included in the current budget. The current operating budget for the sheriff’s office is $33.3 million,, according to budget documents.
