DETROIT -- For the second time in a week, Ford has announced a recall involving thousands of Bronco Sport models. According to the Associated Press, the latest recall involves an estimated 403,000 model year 2021-2024 Bronco Sports and 53,000 model year 2022-2023 Mavericks.

The recall is necessary because of a problem with the body and power train control modules which may not properly detect changes in battery charge. Without proper detection, it can cause an unexpected loss of drive power, which can result in sudden stalling or an inability to restart. It can also cause problems with the use of other electric capabilities such as hazard lights, the AP reports.

While Ford is not aware of any injuries caused as a result of the problem, documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show the company is aware of 917 related warranty reports, 11 field reports and 54 customer complaints related to the issue. Ford is also aware of two property damage claims and three unverified fire reports, according to the AP.

A fix for the issue hasn’t been finalized yet, but a Ford spokesperson said a software update should be ready by later in the second quarter. Once the update is ready, dealerships will recalibrate the impacted vehicles’ body and power train control modules. Affected owners will be notified of the recall via letter starting on May 13.

This recall comes on the heels of last week’s announcement that 43,000 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs were being recalled because of an issue causing fuel to leak. In that case, it was determined that fuel injectors can crack, causing gasoline or vapor to possibly accumulate near ignition sources. If that happens, it can greatly increase the risk of a fire.

That recall is an extension of a 2022 recall involving an estimated 634,000 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs. Ford is aware of five reports of under-hood fires and 14 warranty replacements of fuel injectors in connection with that issue.

The remedy for that problem in currently being investigated by the NHTSA as critics have said the remedy does not fix the actual problem with the fuel injectors.
