SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Santa Fe homeless shelter is launching a new program, making it easier for men and women living on the streets to shower.

The mobile hygiene unit created by the Interfaith Community Shelter has two standard showers with a restroom inside each of them. There’s also a handicap-accessible shower. “We do have hygiene packs that were provided to us by the Rotary club and it’s everything you need to take a shower, your soap, toothbrush, it’s got a comb, it’s got a wash rag. We provide them towels they’re disposable towels so we don’t have to keep them,” said James Butler, Interfaith Community Shelter worker.

There are about 400 homeless people living in Santa Fe, that’s according to officials who said the mobile hygiene unit will also help them get a handle on a worsening problem.

“One of the things that I’m going to be doing, is doing data entry trying to get an idea of what services we can provide people that we aren’t doing right now,” said Interfaith Community Shelter Case Manager.

The mobile hygiene unit will run twice a week. You can find them on Mondays at La Familia Medical Center’s Healthcare for the Homeless off Cerrillos Road and on Thursdays at The Salvation Army on Alameda Street.
