Summit baseball defeats Basalt for third win of the season

The Summit High School baseball team won its third game of the season when it defeated Basalt High School, 14-2, at Eagle Valley High School on Tuesday, April 2.

The win marks the first for the team in almost a month when Summit recorded back-to-back wins at the beginning of March, defeating Glenwood Spring High School on March 8 before beating Alamosa High School on March 9.

After making a run to the Class 4A state baseball tournament last season, Summit began its 2024 spring season on March 7, when it faced the defending state champions, Severance High School, as part of a tournament in Montrose.

The Tigers went into the game looking to knock off a formidable opponent, but the Severance Silver Knights produced 12 hits and put up 15 runs in order to defeat the Tigers, 15-2. Senior Carter Luetkens led the way for the Tigers in the loss, recording two hits and two runs brought in (RBI).

Summit made the proper adjustments heading into its game against Glenwood Springs the very next day, ultimately leading to a 10-1 win. The Tigers scored the first three runs of the game in the first two innings before Glenwood Springs scored a run in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Summit put the game out of reach, sending six runners to home base. With a 9-1 lead, the Tigers shutout the Glenwood Springs Demons for the remainder of the game in order to even out the team’s record to 1-1.

Summit ended the tournament with a 14-4 win over Alamosa on March 9 before losing five straight games from March 12 until its victory over Basalt on Tuesday.

Summit fell to Golden High School, 8-0, on March 12, dropped two games to Rifle High School on March 16 and lost to Conifer High School and Evergreen High School on March 30.

In need of a win, Summit powered past the Basalt Longhorns, producing 10 hits in the 14-2 win.

Leading 3-2 heading into the bottom of the third, the Tigers put together a huge fourth inning, expanding upon its lead and squashing the probability of a Longhorns’ comeback.

Sophomore Sam Eldredge had three hits and three RBIs, and senior Mason Lukasiewicz had three hits and two RBIs.

The Tigers will now travel to Palisade High School for a double header on Saturday, April 6. Palisade, a historically tough team, is currently 6-3-1 this season. Summit defeated the team the last time the two teams met in the Class 4A Region 5 tournament last spring.

Summit is not slated to play a home game until the first week of May when it will host Battle Mountain High School on May 1.
