UPDATE 4/1/24 4:56 p.m.: The man who died in a shooting in Woodbury on Sunday has been identified.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 22-year-old Jaylen Jamal McGruder, of Pine Mountain, Georgia, died in a local hospital after being shot near a liquor store on Highway 85.

The GBI noted a fight broke out in the large group of people at the liquor store before McGruder was shot.

WOODBURY, Ga. (WRBL) — A man died after being shot during a large gathering in Woodbury on Sunday night, according to Woodbury Police Department Chief Richard Wolverton.

Police responded to shots fired at Millarden Road at about 10 p.m. While on the way, police received another call saying someone had been shot.

At the scene, three to four hundred people were gathered near a closed liquor store by a large field. A 22-year-old man was taken to Upson County Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Wolverton says no one is in custody at this time.

Woodbury is a small town with about 900 people located approximately an hour from Columbus in Meriwether County.
