ROCKPORT — Why A Story Slam? What impact could a story possibly have? For over 10 years, Lindsay Pinchbeck of Sweet Tree Arts has made this event part of the school’s fundraising initiatives. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the richness of storytelling alive in our community.

Here is the what and why from an audience perspective: “Stories help us foster the type of community we should all be lucky enough to live in.; Personal truth is spoken with great courage.; Stories are applicable to all individuals;  Hope, sadness, grief, relief, humor, joy, curiosity, excitement, calm, joy, empathy, awe, agreement, gratitude for sharing, amused, interested, sad (cried at one point), surprised, and comforted – it was all there.”

Join us at the Rockport Opera House on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m.  for the Sweet Tree Arts Story Slam. This year’s theme is “ Together”. We welcome a host of local tellers along with talented world renowned story masters. Willy Claflin, is a ”one-man storytelling festival.” Winner of multiple awards, he has told tales in 42 states, and as far away as Indonesia. His work spans historical sagas, ballads, intergalactic yarns and moose-adventures in the Maine backwoods. Dovie Thomason imagines herself as a river, fed by many streams: Lakota, Apache, and Scot Traveller ancestry, urban Chicago, rural Texas and international travels, the Internet and Indigenous elders, family teachings, kitchen table wisdom, and university classrooms — and draws on those contrasts and cultures in her work.

Open to all 12-plus or by adult discretion as some stories may contain adult themes.Tickets are available presale at rockportoperahouse.org. General admission $20.

All proceeds benefit programming at Sweet Tree Arts.
