Rantoul lab fire quickly extinguished thanks to staff action

RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Combe laboratory workers in Rantoul had a brief scare Tuesday morning when a fire started in the building.

It happened near 7 a.m. in the area of Shellhouse Drive and U.S. Highway 136. Officials determined the fire started in a ventilation collecting machine.

Rantoul Fire Chief Chad Smith said the staff did a “fantastic job” of containing the flames before fire crews arrived. Thanks to the employees’ swift action, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

No one was hurt. Smith said normal laboratory operations were able to continue within the day.
