Officers responded to the call around 3:12 a.m. in a Wailuku Elementary School parking lot. They arrived to find the 21-year-old female with a gunshot wound.

Reports said the victim and her 19-year-old boyfriend were sleeping in their vehicle when they were approached by two known Kahului males, ages 19 and 20.

The couple reported the males asked them for narcotics and a lighter, both of which the couple did not have.

MPD said a verbal exchange occurred before the 20-year-old male took out a firearm. The 19-year-old male grabbed the firearm from his partner and attempted to climb into the vehicle.

Reports also revealed that “the 19-year-old victim attempted to wrestle the firearm from the offender, who struck the victim on the top of his head with the weapon and then proceeded to point the firearm at the female’s head.”

After wrestling with the victims, the offender stepped away from the car and fired a shot, striking the 21-year-old female.

Both offenders ran away from the area after the incident.

Medics reported to the scene to transport the female victim to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

According to police, no other injuries were reported.
