What are primaries? Primary election definition

According to FVAP.gov, primaries are elections used by differing political parties to select candidates for a general election. Each party’s candidates run against each other in the general election. Primaries can be open, closed or semi-closed.

Open primary definition

In an open primary, a voter of any political affiliation can vote in the primary of any political party. A voter can only vote in one party’s primary and in many cases aren't required to choose a political affiliation when they register to vote.

Closed primary definition

Voters can only vote in the primary of the party they are registered with in a closed primary election, and are often required to choose a party affiliation on their voter registration form.

What type of primaries does Kentucky have?

Kentucky has closed primaries, meaning those who want to vote in the Democratic or Republican primary election must have changed their party affiliation by December 31 of the year prior.

When does voter registration end in Kentucky?

The deadline for voter registration for Kentucky's presidential and state primaries is Monday, April 22. For online or in-person registrations, they need to be submitted by 4 p.m.
