Oakland basketball gets its time to shine Thursday as an underdog trying to make noise against one of college basketball's most storied programs in the first round upset of the 2024 NCAA tournament.

The 24-seeded Golden Grizzlies (23-11) will play 3-seed Kentucky in the first round at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh in the South region. Winner faces the winner of No. 5 Texas Tech vs. No. 12 N.C. State on Saturday for a spot in the Sweet 16. Oakland secured the conference's only bid by winning three straight games in the conference tournament after earning the No. 1 seed by clinching the regular season title.

Oakland earned a bid as an automatic qualifier after winning the Horizon League tournament Tuesday. It is the school's fourth trip to the NCAA tournament, holding a 1-3 record, and first time participating in March Madness since 2011. Head coach Greg Kampe, the longest-tenured active coach in the sport, and his squad will be looking for the Second Round trip in the school's Division 1 history (the previous win came in the First Four round).
